Battle of Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima happened in 1945 and it was one of the “stepping stones” for the Americans on their way to Japan. The battle was between the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy and the United States Marines and Navy. Even though Iwo Jima is very small, the island was considered to be a very important strategic island for both the Americans and the Japanese. After a two month long bombing campaign and another six day bombardment by American battleships, the Marines landed on the beaches and suffered heavy casualties. By the end of the first day, the Americans had cut the island in half. But after this the Americans only advanced a few hundred meters a day. After over a month of fighting, the United States captured the island. The picture of the Marines placing the flag on top of the mountain became a symbolic picture that still lives on to this day.
