Franklin RooseveltFranklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was born into a rich family on January 30th, 1882, in Springwood, New York. During his younger years, Roosevelt was taught by tutors and governesses up until he was 14 years old. After he attended Groton School, he went to Harvard University and received his degree in three years. Then after being elected to multiple political offices, FDR ran for the presidency in 1932 and he won the election. In 1940, the economy was slowly coming out of the depression and Roosevelt had served two full terms. Roosevelt did not announce that he would run for a third consecutive term, which had never been done before. He got reelected and during 1941, FDR pushed American factories to help the Allies because the United States was not officially at war with the Axis Powers. That all changed when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The day after the attack Roosevelt, went to Congress to ask for a declaration of war on Japan. During World War II, FDR was the Commander and Chief of the American military. He worked with his military advisors to defeat the Germans in Europe and the Japanese in the Pacific. As the war dragged on, Roosevelt started to become very stressed because of the war and in 1944 tests showed that he had atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Even with these problems, he ran for a fourth term with Harry S. Truman as his running mate. Then on April 12th, 1945, Franklin Roosevelt suddenly died from a cerebral hemorrhage. Truman then assumed the presidency.
