Josef MengeleJosef Mengele, also known as “The Angel of Death”, was a German scientist who conducted experiments on people in the notorious death camp Auschwitz. Mengele received his schooling at the Institute of Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene, as well as a Ph.D. in physical anthropology from the University of Munich. Mengele was particularly interested in the study of twins, and would remain interested when he got to Auschwitz. Mengele performed many experiments on twins, presumably searching for a method of creating a race of Aryans for Hitler. Mengele also performed these experiments in order to find the origin of certain diseases. Mengele performed various other experiments on the Jews and Roma held in Auschwitz, one of which included an attempt to change eye pigmentation. Once the war ended, Mengele fled the country for South America. Mengele would remain on the run for 34 years, never getting caught, until his death in 1979 ("Josef Mengele").
