Walter Cronkite( Walter Cronkite worked for the United Press during World War II. He flew with the United States Air Force on bombing missions over Germany, reporting what he saw. Cronkite also covered the Nuremburg Trials. In 1946, Cronkite found a job in the Soviet Union as the United Press bureau chief in Moscow. Reporting was tough, and tensions were high due to the Stalinist paranoia and the government-controlled media. Cronkite returned two years later in 1948 and began working for many radio stations in the Midwest.
Cronkite was also a very influential news reporter during the Vietnam. He was a man the people of America trusted and respected, and because of this he held a lot of power and influence. Cronkite was often known as the “most trusted man in America” (Simkin). |
Ernie Pyle Ernie Pyle was known as America’s most widely read war correspondent during World War II. Pyle reported the news all over the world during the war, and was at many major battles. Some of these included the Battle of the Blitz in England, the liberation of North Africa as well as the invasions of Sicily and Italy, the landings at Normandy, and even the liberation of France.
Pyle became sick of the war and wanted to come home to his wife. He could allow himself to do this however, because he felt he had been with the troops so long, and had been involved so much, that he would have felt like he was disserting. Pyle won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism in 1945, just a short time before he was killed in Okinawa by enemy sniper fire (Simkin). |
